Blog #10: Sorry!

I have been so busy, it's not even funny. I'm soon off to the studio to begin inking my final hometown map copy, which I'm very excited about starting. (When I was at draft 1 of 6, this seemed so far away). The inking is difficult, though. The pens we're using are ridiculously thin (A normal ball-point pen would be about .6mm-.75mm diameter, the pens I'm using range from .13-.18. And using the pens at all requires you to change your style of drawing completely; you need to hold the pen at a complete 90-degree angle to get anywhere. Also, I'm "hashing and stippling" the entire project- or, in layman's terms, I'm making .13mm dots cover the space of a 24"x36" piece of mylar. To say I'm going to live in studio this week is the understatement of the month. It's due a week from today (gulp), so please wish me luck!

Besides the studio, I've been doing a bunch of fun things on campus. My friend Troy and I have been going to the gym every day, working out and playing racquetball. Between 2-3 hours in the gym per day, 8-10 hours in studio a day, and 5-10 minutes eating per day (just kidding. more like 15 minutes), I don't have much time to do anything else. But I'm still having a blast. I'm going to go stipple until my hand falls off, so I'll post a longer blog tomorrow. Sorry it took so long to post this one.

Love you all and miss you all!
Norman

  1. Hi there! Thanks for the update. The hometown map will be awesome. The stippling.....I don't know abut THAT! But you will do it and do it well, I am sure. Good for you to try to have some balance with working out, being withyour friends, and even eating. That will help you stay healthy.

  2. All those trips to the gym sound great! That will help give you the energy and strength to get through all the hard work and long hours. I guess I better hit the bike if I have any hopes of keeping up with you on the racquetball court when we come down for parents weekend. Keep up the hard work and stay healthy!

  4. Hi Angel! I am so glad you were able to give us an update!!! We know how busy you are, and we love getting to hear about your day as often as possible. I have one little favor to ask of you -- we all miss you so very much and we love hearing about everything you do -- so I thought that maybe you could just turn your skype on and carry your computer with you for a whole day, or 2 or maybe 5 years or so -- just a thought!
I know how tough the work load is, but it sounds as if you are enjoying the challenge. We are all here cheering you on. If they had a counter on the number of times your entries have been read, and re-read, it would break some kind of record. I love that you are keeping all of us with you on your journey.

I am thrilled that you are making time to have some fun. Just make sure you get the rest you need and try to eat some healthy food to go along with all of that wonderful exercise you're getting!

I miss you and I love you so VERY much!!! 1-4-3 Mommy

  5. Maybe we should each start a jar and add a penny every time we check the blog.

  6. If we all give Norman Jr. our jars full of pennies does that make him professional writer?

  7. Hi Angel!
Thinking about you all day (of course!) and wondering how your project is coming along. Are you still able to even hold a raquet after all that stippling??? I was coloring with my little munchkins today and one of my buddies started shaking his hand after coloring for a few minutes, telling me it was TOO much work -- I had to laugh, thinking about how much work your project involves.
I love your work space, and can see glimpses of Bruce on your wall -- I raised you well! Send a few more photos when you can!!!
I love the penny jar idea -- you'll be a millionaire before you graduate!
Hope you had a great day.
We love you more than the world -- 1-4-3

  9. I don't know how to upload a photo from my phone on here, butI sent my mom a picture of my progress on Brue getting stippled, so I'm sure if you ask her she can send it to you.

I just worked out with my friend Troy, and I'm guessing that I won't be able to lift my arms over my shoulders or twist my body at all until November.

My still-shaking hands will make stippling so much fun tonight! [facepalm]

    Love you all!

  11. Ok, Norman ... Time for an UPDATE!!! You owe us lots of pennies!!! We know how busy you are. I can only imagine how time consuming the inking process is, given the intricacy of the Bruce work. You are AMAZING!!! I emailed a copy of the picture to everyone, and I printed a copy to show off to everyone at subshop. Needless to say, they were amazed and very VERY impressed!!! One of the girls I work with has a brother in school for art -- she kept telling me how incredible your work was and said she knew exactly how difficult the inking is. everyone loved your work. I can't wait to show my friends at Ivy Hedge tomorrow!

OK -- Daddy is watching the Cowboys game right now, so I know you are not happy. Hope it turns around.

I love you angel boy, and I miss you. love you bunches!!! 143
